July 1 is fast approaching, bringing with it a flurry of moves, appliance upgrades… and sometimes bulky items to get rid of.
Good news: a new initiative from GoRecycle has just been launched on the Island of Montreal and in Laval. The program now offers free home pickup of refrigeration appliances.
A refrigerator or freezer contains much more than just plastic and metal:
If not managed properly, these components are major pollutants. When discarded on the side of the road, appliances are often hastily dismantled for their metals, without the gases being properly extracted.
GoRecycle estimates that a single improperly disposed appliance can release 1 ton of GHGs into the atmosphere—equivalent to a round-trip flight from Montreal to Barcelona.
Since June 2025, GoRecycle has been offering a free door-to-door collection service in Montreal for the easy disposal of:
In Laval only, the following are also accepted:
1. Submit your request online at gorecycle.com
2. Prepare the appliance:
3. A carrier will pick it up on the scheduled date
This service is offered free of charge. Simply fill out an online request, choose a pickup date, and place the appliance at the edge of your property (not on the sidewalk).
This service is particularly useful when:
GoRecycle offers a concrete solution to reduce the environmental impact of our old appliances while simplifying their disposal.
Whether you are replacing an appliance or freeing up space, this service allows you to take responsible action, easily.
The appliances are processed in Quebec, notably at the PureSphera plant in Bécancour:
By 2024, GoRecycle claims to have prevented the emission of more than 150,000 tons of GHG, the equivalent of 24,676 trips around the globe by plane.
