Tree Canada grants: funding for planting edible trees

Would you like to green up your common space and add a gourmet touch?

Tree Canada, a non-profit organization dedicated to the planting and care of trees, offers a grant for the planting of edible trees in communities. This initiative could be of interest, among others, to condominiums wishing to create a living space that is both aesthetically pleasing and productive.

What is Tree Canada’s “Edible Trees” program?

Since 2012, Tree Canada has completed over 220 Edible Trees projects and planted over 19,000 fruit and nut trees in communities across Canada.

In particular, this program aims to:

  • Strengthen links between people and local food sources.
  • Create friendly, pleasant community spaces.
  • Promote biodiversity in urban environments.

How does the grant work?

  • Amount: Up to $10,000 per project;
  • Eligible expenses: Purchase and plantation of edible trees and shrubs, site preparation, tree maintenance, planting materials and developing education materials.
  • Support offered: Tree Canada provides logistical support and expert advice throughout the project.
  • Application period: October to early December of the year preceding project implementation.

What are the benefits of edible trees for condominiums?

  • Reduce the urban heat island effect and access a potential harvest of fruits or nuts produced by the trees.
  • Attractive green spaces: Edible trees contribute to the beauty and attractiveness of common spaces, improving residents’ quality of life.
  • Strengthening the sense of community: Maintaining and harvesting fruits and nuts can encourage collaboration and sharing between residents.
  • Contributing to the fight against climate change: Trees absorb CO2 and help reduce the condominium’s ecological footprint.

If you are interested in obtaining a grant to plant edible trees in your condominium, we invite you to visit the Tree Canada website for more information and to submit an application.

In summary, Tree Canada’s “Edible Trees” initiative offers a unique opportunity for condominiums to create sustainable green spaces that benefit the community and the environment.
